Web hosting is a service required to publish and operate a private or business website under a domain name. The service provides web storage space (web space) that can be used for the respective website. With traditional web hosting (also known as “shared hosting”), website operators share server resources such as CPU and RAM with other web hosting customers.
The big advantage of web hosting from Switzerland is the data and server location. With Hostpoint’s Swiss web hosting, valuable data such as web, e-mail and database data, as well as personal data, is stored in a highly secure data center in Switzerland. This is very relevant for business customers as well as many private customers. With web hosting from Switzerland, you can make sure your data is not stored abroad.
Since 2020, Hostpoint has held the «swiss hosting» quality seal, which can only be used by hosting providers with registered offices and data storage in Switzerland.
Web hosting is what is known as “shared hosting,” which means that web hosting customers share certain server resources. With traditional web hosting, all web services (e.g. web, e-mail, database servers) are usually hosted on the same server. Not so with Hostpoint web hosting: we have several cluster solutions that manage the individual services on their own systems. Where possible, the services are designed with redundancy. Web hosting is also based on the “best-effort” principle, as performance may vary depending on the capacity utilization of other customers.
With a Managed Flex Server, customers are permanently allocated certain server resources (e.g. vCPU and RAM). This generally means even greater reliability and performance. However, the biggest benefit is that in addition to traditional programming languages (e.g. HTML, PHP), other web technologies such as Node.js, Java, Ruby on Rails, Python and advanced Nginx configurations can also be used. Redis (“in-memory” database) or Memcached (“cache storage”) can also further improve the performance of the CMS used.
SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) and SSH (Secure Shell) are included with all Hostpoint web hosting products. This allows you to establish a secure connection between your computer and our server and to transfer your data securely. You can also use the SSH console to execute important commands directly on your web server with us.
We keep your web, e-mail and database data for up to 180 days. The number of days varies depending on the web hosting product (up to 30 days for Standard, up to 90 days for Smart and up to a full 180 days for Business). We charge a flat fee of CHF 100 for every backup restoration.
We cannot install backups for individual customers for cloud services such as Drive, Calendar and Address Books. We recommend that our customers keep local backup copies of important data.
In addition, we mirror your web hosting data on several hard drives for even greater availability. We also recommend that our customers regularly back up their most important website data, databases and e-mails locally or in another secure location. This further increases the security of your data.
