A domain is a unique online address. It is the alphanumeric translation of an IP address, or the “name” of your website and e-mail. It makes internet addresses easier to remember and use. Domains have a hierarchical structure, running from right to left. They consist of a domain extension called a “top-level domain” after the period (e.g. your-own-domain.ch), a middle part called the “second-level domain”, which can usually be anything you like (e.g. your-own-domain.ch), any sub-level or third-level domains (e.g. shop.your-own-domain.ch), and a frequently used but not mandatory “www.” prefix. Domains can be registered and actively used through infrastructure provided by Hostpoint as a web hosting provider. When combined with a web hosting, you can operate a website with your domain and set up unlimited subdomains as well as e-mail addresses.
Domains are normally activated within a few hours (up to 24 hours). However, it may take a little longer (48–72 hours) for some domain extensions. For .ch domains, you can expect an average wait time of one day.
If you already own a domain, it’s as easy as pie to transfer it to Hostpoint. You will need to request a transfer code from your current provider first. As soon as you have received this, you can find your domain on our domain transfer page. Then, click on “Domain in use – transfer to Hostpoint now” and follow the instructions in the Hostpoint ordering process. If you want to transfer a number of domains at once, you can use the “bulk transfer” option.
A .ch domain costs CHF 15 per year with Hostpoint. In the first year, you even get everything for just CHF 5: the domain transfer to Hostpoint, the change of ownership, the owner address or name server update, the restoration of your domain after deletion and tried-and-tested free Hostpoint support are all included at no charge. Following the revision of the Swiss Ordinance on Internet Domains (OID), which entered into force on January 1, 2021, it is no longer possible to publish the names and addresses of domain owners. In the EU, this has been the case for some time due to the GDPR. However, in these instances, it is still possible to find information on the domain registrar via Hostpoint’s Whois page. You will then be able to see which provider the domain was registered with, at least. Information on the domain owner can also be found via a Whois search, depending on the country and the law under which a registrar operates.
